The Top 10 Things Geeks Argue About
When it comes to Geek culture, QFT.net is no stranger to the habits of its dear readers. Being who they are, they are passionate about their hobbies and interests and will rarely shy away from expressing their opinions and beliefs on such subjects. Unfortunately, these opinions tend to differ from one person to the next, leading to the usual clash of interests that we often get to experience. With the infinitely expanding boundaries of the internet, finding people to argue with has never been easier.
These are subjects amongst many others that people are almost too keen on being so opinionated about; but what sets them apart is that they are the main topics of contention amongst Geeks. That is what this blog sets out to deal with, and the following list can be considered a good summary of what you will expect to see here on QFT.net in the coming days.
Here are the top 10 topics of contention amongst enthusiasts worldwide, listed in no particular order.
1. Films
“I’d rather eat my eyes then subject them to her movies.” –MrsBass3
Films are likely one of the most sought after mediums of entertainment, so it’s no wonder that such a wide array of differing opinions exist for each film that comes out. Even films that are decades old still remain a topic of disagreement amongst enthusiasts and fanatics alike.
2. TV Shows
“I was disgusted with the producers and scriptwriters of this show after this episode.” –rameshp
Similar in nature to Films, TV shows attract an overall different kind of watcher, and their episodic nature often kindles discussions along the course of their running rather than being restricted mainly to the few days or weeks that they’re available in theaters. Over extended periods of time, these often whittle down the fanbase to a loyal few who would defend their preferred series tooth and nail.
3. Sci-Fi/Fantasy
“Any type of smart [sci-fi] show with bearable premise is now slipping away.” –CylonRomo
Lucas, Tolkien or Roddenberry, rest assured you’ll be met with plenty of adamant supporters at the drop of a hat if you dare to utter a single word against any of the franchises under this section of Geeky interests. These are but two subsets of the previous two entries dealt with in this list; however, Science Fiction and Fantasy themes account for the traditional image that is conjured up in most people’s minds when thinking about Geeks. As a firm staple for most, this sub-category warrants its own section of argument-inducing topics.
4. Music
“Their lyrics are relatable if you’re a 14 year old.” –Tomfish3000
In general, you might find that those inclined towards Sci-Fi, Fantasy or Gaming are attracted to similar genres overall. Rock, Electronica and other variantes of such are the strongest contenders amongst such a demographic; in spite of this, however, variations in taste and exceptions still exist that naturally bring about a clash of interests.
5. Anime
“I think NARUTO is gay!!!!!” –xXSILVERXx
Admittedly, Anime isn’t the best topic to choose if you’re looking for highbrow discussion, however in its defense there is a considerable amount of its fanbase that is still in its teens, so really, you can’t expect much. Certain titles can spark debate that avoids mud slinging, though you’d have to know where to look in order to find it.
6. Books
“I hate how everybody heaps praise onto this book, and I can’t believe it was chosen to be read by practically every student in the nation.” –troglodyte22
Granted, books aren’t the staple of most heated arguments unless it’s about the film remake; however there is the issue of graphic novels and comic books which, albeit in a class of their own, seem to attract their fair share of vocal opinion-slinging on the ‘net.
7. Technology
“Every [operating system] sucks in some way or other. They are designed for maximal sysadmin discomfort by festering syphillitic marketroids.” –linuxmafia.com
This is another veritable hot potato for the sake of arguments, competing with the likes of The Matrix and Star Trek over in the previous categories as listed above. There is more to it than just the contesting of different Operating Systems with each other, reaching as far as to which programming language is King. This has been going on since the dawn of the first computer system, and shows no signs of ever stopping.
8. Gadgets
“Overhyped, it is just another [phone] as said, and it doesn’t do anything particularly special compared to any other.” –SDreamer
There’s absolutely nothing better to inspire brand loyalty and stoke the flames of discussion than personal, monetary investment. To add to that factor, the latest gadgets have had a nasty habit of coming with a pretty steep price tag as part of the package; as if the stakes of arguments they’re involved in needed to be raised any further.
9. Games
“God your console of choice is fucking gay, with it’s ugly black or white colour scheme and stupid controller.” –sheik rock
The monster of all argumentative topics under the Geek subset, this subject never fails to entertain. Followers of one manufacturer or the other (or the other) will argue for literally months without any signs of reaching a form of consensus on their arguing, baiting and flaming. The greatest catalyst for these arguments is similar in nature to that of Gadget-related discussions; that being personal investment.
Or, as I like to call it, “which console my parents decided to buy me.”
This subject encompasses a nigh on endless multitude of sub-genres, types and mediums; including, but not limited to current-gen videogames, retro, tabletop and board games. None of them are exempt from heated debates.
10. The Internet
“Because If You Don’t Hate Others Nobody Else Will.” –Misanthropy Today
Okay, so perhaps this is too much of a blanket statement and can be considered as cheating, but think about it for a second. You can look to just about any corner of the Internet and you can pretty much bet that whatever you find, there’s content dedicated specifically to argue or complain about it in some way. You know it’s gotten bad when people trash talk about something as silly as a kitten wanting food.
As mentioned above, the Internet has become the prime medium for arguments and disagreements to take place upon – but it also provides the content for people to argue about.
It’s a rather fruitless, depressing and self-fulfilling cycle, but shows no signs of ever going away.
